시카고 양식은 숫자-서지(Notes-Bibliography) 양식과 저자-날짜(Author-Date) 양식 모두 사용 가능하며, 숫자-서지 양식으로 사용할 경우 각주 또는 미주 삽입.
숫자-서지 양식은 주로 인문학 및 예술 분야에서 널리 쓰이며 저자-날짜 양식은 주로 사회과학, 자연과학 분야에서 쓰임.

1) 제1저자 성의 알파벳 순으로 작성
2) 1저자는 "성, 이름" 으로 작성하고 2저자부터는 "이름 성"
3) 같은 저자의 문헌을 여러개 인용할 경우 문헌 제목의 알파벳 순으로 정렬
4) 자료의 종류에 따라 서지를 구분하여 제공하는 경우도 있음
5) 일반적으로 모든 인용 문헌을 제시하는 것을 권장하나 상황에 따라 선택적으로 표기 가능
6) 저자가 동일한 문헌의 경우 두번째 인용부터 em-dash를 3번 사용하여 저자명을 대체
